BBQ Checklist

  • Spread the word

Everyone loves a good BBQ. And whilst it's nice throw one on the spur of the moment when the sun comes out, it's good to let people know in advance and get an idea of numbers. Remember to invite your neighbours to keep them sweet if you think your BBQ might get a bit raucous.

  • Decorating your garden

It's easy to create a memorable atmosphere with a few inexpensive decorations. If you really want to get into the party spirit, stringing some fairy lights from the trees will allow your garden party to extend long into the twilight hours and tea lights and garden candles can help keep the bugs away.

  • Make them comfortable

If you don't have garden furniture, cushions, beanbags and blankets are a great way to make guests comfortable outside. The more you can spread around, the more relaxed they will be. If the weather's right, you could even try moving your indoor furniture into the garden for ultimate comfort.

  • Start the fire early

Stack 20 to 30 pieces of charcoal in the centre of your BBQ and coat them with lighter fluid. Then light the charcoal and leave it to burn for at least 45 minutes - or until they glow white - before you start cooking.

  • Prepare, prepare, prepare

Try to prepare as much as you can before your guests arrive, including small things like garnishes and side dishes. That way you can stay calm and confident throughout. Nibbles in bowls are ideal for whetting appetites.

  • Welcome your guests

It's a great idea to have pitchers of drinks for your guests. It makes a nice welcome and they can top up at their leisure. Take a peek at our recipes page for some refreshing summer cocktails. A bucket of ice is a great way to keep beers cool and ready for grabbing.

  • Stylish and cool

Try freezing small fruit like blueberries or cranberries in ice cubes and using them to keep a fruit platter cool and fresh. They're bright, colourful, add a touch of class to proceedings and taste pretty good chucked in a drink too.

  • Keep them entertained

Simple games are a great icebreaker and many of your favourites like Jenga and Connect4 are now available in giant sizes. Or try the lawn classic that's becoming popular again - Croquet. This gets everyone involved and really makes the most of your garden setting.

  • The soundtrack

Music is essential at any party and this is no exception. Compile a playlist making sure there's plenty to get you through the night. Keep the music chilled early on and then throw in a few classics to liven things up later. Keep the neighbours from complaining by making sure they're invited.

  • Keep it neat

Well, kind of. It's just that it's a lot easier to clear up as you go instead of deciding to do it in the dark or even worse - first thing in the morning.

When the BBQ has finished

  • Remove the ashes

Always remove as many of the ashes from your grill or barbecue as possible. While the ashes themselves pose no particular problem, when they get wet they can be corrosive and damage your barbecue.
